The moon is the most tangible version of the self, the one that feels the most real, and the most material. It impacts a native’s everyday life in a way that cannot be denied. It is the self that exists in the moment, the way that your body works, and the way that your mind and mental faculties are impacted by the body.
The Moon is most commonly associated with emotions, the mind, the unconscious, and sense of comfort within a person. It also rules nurturing, motherhood, and the environment that one is raised in. The moon is usually discussed in the realm of these non material aspects, but the Moon traditionally also rules the body, the fluctuation of hormones, and the way it impacts emotions and thinking, is through these bodily functions.
A child begins their life sharing their body with their mother. This means that the physical health of the mother is passed down to the child, impacting them in ways that will probably continue for the rest of their life. There is an unconscious and extremely familial element to the kind of body that one has. The body and how it works is impacted by epigenetics, by the state of mind that the mother has during pregnancy, and by the way that the body reacts to the external stimuli. The reaction of the body, in this case, doesn’t refer to the voluntary body, but rather, to the hormonal conditions.
Pyschological imbalances, mental disorders, and emotional conditions are often talked about in the realm of hormones, and that is exactly what the moon is. The Moon is not the self, as much as it is the way that you are being impacted by the body and the world. It is, in many ways, not the truest sense of self. The Moon is the mindset which can easily be altered through medication.
Moon is often seen as receptive Yin energy, and excess of Yin energy is known to be a place where ghosts thrive. A person with excess Yin energy is one who can get possessed more easily. This is interesting to me, because, the concept of possession is one which is about not being in control of the self, or being controlled by forces that are not truly you. Over identification with, or overly strengthening the Moon can lead to a feeling of not being in control, or sometimes, to a feeling of being dependent on another force. Moon represents childhood, and children are often dependent on their parents. In motherhood, too, the mood swings of pregnancy can be seen as the soul of the future child possessing the mother.
So, when we refer to the strength of moon, or a positive Moon, what does that mean? It refers to a body that is relaxed and comfortable in almost all situations, a body that doesn’t hold on to the circumstances or to the traumas of the past. A positive moon can be reactive to the current circumstances, but it doesn’t hold on to those circumstances after they are gone. A strong moon lets the waves of emotions and feelings pass through the body, and doesn’t try too hard to control it, but also, looks for ways to improve their comfort and works to eradicate discomfort in the body through improving their environment.
A negative Moon, or a Moon that is afflicted (or afflictions in the sign of cancer) holds on to trauma, and can often unconsciously behave in ways that are not correct for the situation. A sense of paranoia, or being closed off to certain external stimulation, can be pervasive for a negative Moon. A weak moon often seeks to control the flow of emotions, often through martian brute force, and can stay in discomfort for much longer than is necessary.
This brute control of a weak moon can lead to tension in the body, which can lead to falling sick, hairfall, skin issues, and a host of other symptoms which cause long term issues. Moon is physical beauty, and stress is one of the leading causes of ugliness.
Whether the moon is weak or strong, external stimulation will always be a factor that impacts people and their lives. Both weak moon and strong moon are impacted heavily by the force of what cannot be controlled (the physical body). The difference is just that a strong moon will react more heavily in the moment, and a weak moon will react more slowly, and will be impacted in a way that is more subtle.
So, the healthiest moon is not just a moon that is strong, but a moon that is directed by the Sun, the ideal sense of self. As in, feelings and what one chooses to be affected by should be aligned with an innate sense of purpose. My post on the Sun can be found here.
