Saturn is a planet that rules Karma. It specifically rules the experience of suffering, marginalization, dehumanization, and the collective to the point where Saturn can often cause a native to dehumanize themselves, because they identify very hard with the collective of an identity rather than as themselves as individuals.
Something that Saturn forces us to contend with is that suffering exists in the world. This, by itself, is an uncomfortable situation. Why does suffering exist? Why do innocents get harmed when they have done nothing? The concept of rebirth and karma adds another layer to this discomfort, where you look at a child that has been harmed for no reason, and a concept like karma makes you think, “oh they must have done something terrible in a past life”, and essentially, paint a victim as a previous aggressor, and justify the harms that are done to them.
Saturn is the concept of retributive justice. It is the great equalizer, the planet that seeks to bring balance. What is put into the world by you will return to you, whether in this life, or the next. When we implement the mindset of Saturn into our lives, we begin to see things in this same way. People, ultimately, deserve what they get, and for us, it is pointless to have sympathy or goodwill for them.
For this reason, Saturn falls in the sign of Aries, and does badly in the first house. It exalts in the sign of Libra, and gains directional strength in the seventh house. The meaning of this is that we must not apply the directions of Saturn to become Saturn. Rather, what we must do is see it, as something separate to us. One of the significations of Saturn is the material world, and Saturn in Libra, or in the seventh house represents the concept of being in the world, but not of it. As in, we can see the world as our partner, as something to work with, but not something that we are, or something we should emulate.
Recently, I watched a youtube video by a hospice care nurse, who was taking care of a compassionate release patient, which is a program where terminally ill inmates are released into the care of a hospice. She looked him up, and realized that his crime was torturing a young woman to death, and it troubled her, to think that she had to give a peaceful and calm death to a person who ensured that someone else had had a terrible death.
The video ends with her saying that she made peace with the fact that her job was to give kindness to a person in their death, regardless of who they were, and what they did, and she ends the video by talking about how this experience had changed her life even in the day to day. In her words,
What I didn’t expect is that this mentality expanded to a lot of different areas of my life, like when people wish for me to fail, I genuinely want for them to succeed, and when people are mean to me, I am kind to them, and I am so happy that I am not mean
The essence of a good Saturn is knowing that you are not, and cannot be the one who enacts justice. You are not God, and you cannot embody the same cruelty that a god can embody. Your job on Earth is to live your truth, and, once you are good at living your truth, inspire others to do the same. Being a mean person, being a cruel person, or punishing people for their sins is not for you to do.
When you believe in a concept such as karma, what that should lead to is not an analysis of who did what, or why someone deserved what they got. Humans should never be the ones to enact punitive justice. When people die and they are reborn, they come back as innocent children first. Those who are cruel to them, who indoctrinate them, who give them tools that will be used to harm, they are trapping themselves in the same cycle that these souls are trapped in.
Sometimes, you are a tool for karma to enact justice on certain people. That is the spirit of Saturn in first house, or Saturn in Aries. But, the point of learning astrology is to be able to understand what things come naturally, and how some of those things should change for the best quality of life. In that vein, you can simply opt out, and become a tool of kindness, not a tool of cruelty, channeling Saturn in Libra. How other people are, or how other people should be is none of your business. Your business is to be the best human you can be, and that is it.
