Shared joy is a double joy; Shared sorrow is half a sorrow
Swedish Proverb
Venus and Jupiter are considered benefics, the planets that bring wealth, luck, love, and all sorts of good things into your life. Something interesting about these planets is that despite the idea that astrology is about fulfilment of the self, or the idea that it should take you to singularity, these are planets that are extremely concerned with the external, as in, the world and the people in it.
Jupiter is the grace of the teacher, generosity shown to you through the act of giving you knowledge, wisdom, and protection in difficult times. It is the world, and the experiences in it, that expand your knowledge, shift your worldview, and make you think in ways that are unfamiliar and more broad scale.
Venus is the lover, what gives you joy, pleasure, and sensual stimulation. It is the beauty of the world, things that bring you happiness just by existing. Things that you look at and gain an appreciation of the material for. Things that make you want to be alive and experience the world for.
Venus and Jupiter speak to an exchange of energies, the giving and taking between the student and teacher, the union of lovers, and more importantly, the creation of energy through this exchange and union. The creation of energy is a key part of this picture, because that is what brings the benefic energy. When you combine energies with someone else, some of your good energy is gone, but you gain someone else’s good energy, as well, and for the two of you, the union of the other’s natural energy with yours creates something entirely new, and something more beautiful.
In a previous post, I discussed Jupiter as a karmic shock absorber, but in many ways, what allows it to act this way is the fact that there is goodwill between two parties, that allows the negative energy to be dampened. Venus can and should function in the same way, where the equal exchange of energy dampens the negativity.
To a large extent, the energies of the benefics are like sex (venus), for the purpose of creating a metaphorical baby (Jupiter’s exaltation in Cancer). People often think about sex in a way that relates to just power, but on a more benefic level, it can become a metaphor for creating a new being. This is the function of the benefics. To expand the natural energy, to create new and beautiful things, to fundamentally change you, and turn you into something better than you already are.
