The word malefic strikes fear into the hearts of people. As a word, it is not very descriptive or nuanced, all it really means is, “bad” on some level. But, we don’t question the basic premise of the word. Why are the malefics bad? In my opinion, the reason that the malefics are malefics is because these are the planets that drain you and give you nothing in return. The malefics are the most visceral planets, the planets that keep you alive, in a sense. The calories you expend in your life.
When it comes to the other planets, indulging in the Sun or the Moon will make someone be able to tap into their inherent energy. Venus and Jupiter both relate to exchanging energies and expanding the energy of both parties through that exchange. Mercury relates to expanding skillsets. All these planets do not drain the natives, but rather, allow the native to expand or control their energy. Mars and Saturn, then, are unique for being planets that drain the native.
Mars is the warrior planet, the foot soldier that dies and remains nameless for it. Sometimes, it is the scapegoat, the human sacrifice that a bridge is built upon. The ultimate goal of Mars is to protect and defend those who cannot protect themselves. In daily life, Mars is also the drive, motivation, and the actions of an individual. The way to get things done, in a sense. Mars is not the energy of a person, but rather, how that energy is used.
Saturn is the planet of service and of karma. The dues that one must pay to society, what one owes other people, and what one owes to society at large. It also represents what society owes to the native, but with Saturn, the exchange is not equal. What one gives to society is often more than what they get back. If this is not the case, then, many times, this creates a karmic debt that the native will have to pay back in their next life. Saturn is the planet that creates samskaras, connections to the world that keeps one trapped in this world. On a practical level, Saturn rules over how an individual connects to the larger society, to especially people that they do not know.
The Malefics are both debts that you owe to the Earth for existing. They will be part of your life, whether you want them to be or not. The very best way to manage these planets is not through avoiding them, or even by letting them happen to you, but by actively taking control, and choosing what type of suffering that you want to go through. While you do owe the world a certain level of suffering, you can and should choose what that suffering will entail, and, for Saturn, what you get out of that suffering.
Mars and Saturn, at the end of the day, are ideally what you choose to protect and serve. They show what you are willing to give, where you are willing to give, what sacrifices you are willing to make, that you will never get back. What you are willing to be beaten for, and what you are willing to get a lack of appreciation for. They are your hill to die on.
